Example 2: Determine which conic section is the given equation x2 + y2 4y -12 = 0? Solution: Given equation is x2 + y2 4y -12 = 0. The equation can be written as (x 0)2 + (y 2)2 16 = 0 Therefore (x 0)2 + (y 2)2 = 42. Hence given is equation of a circle with center (0, 2) and radius 4 units.
